About The Position

Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the

Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from various
departments within the hospital setting. Provides patient services to the
infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. Delivers specimens
and supplies to and from Nursing Departments as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to interact effectively with patients, staff and the public.
• Ability to perform duties with minimal direction.
• Effective use of proper body mechanics when handling patients, supplies and equipment.
• Ability to safely operate patient care equipment such as beds, stretchers, wheelchairs and patient lifts.
• Ability to handle a physically demanding environment.
• Ability to keep patient and employee information confidential.
• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Current CPR certification of certification achieved during orientation.

Responsibilities

• Promptly and courteously provides patient transport services between all nursing departments within established time frames. Including those departments that do not have coverage.
• Provides services as patients are discharged from nursing department when the volunteer and nursing staff is not available in a timely manner.
• Accurately records all department requests via Order Entry in Meditech according to established guidelines for patient transport.
• Provides transport services to the morgue with respect and dignity for the patient.
• Assists with lifting, turning and positioning patients to assure correct body alignment. Uses proper body mechanics to assist with the transfer of patient to stretcher or wheelchair as requested by nursing department.
• Uses AIDET principle when communicating with patients to ensure high patient satisfaction.
• Ensures oxygen is set according to the patient’s nurse and has sufficient oxygen for transport of patient.
• Transfer IV pump/fluids, drains, NG tubes, and catheter bags with care and ensure lines are transferred safely according to hospital policy.
• Carefully and safely handles patient’s clothing and other personal property during patient transport between nursing departments.
• Works cooperatively as a team to service the customers.
• Promptly assist other transporters and departments when asked.
• Supports and mentors other transporters during their orientation process.
• Promptly and accurately delivers blood for the ICU.
• Performs late deliveries and errands when working evening shift.
• Transports oxygen tanks to the nursing units on the required schedule.
• Performs hand hygiene before and after patient care.
• Cleans hospital equipment (stretchers, wheelchairs) according to department standards.
• Uses appropriate PPE when required for patient care or isolation patients.
