About The Position

Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Constant Observer supports patient safety through monitoring and observation of assigned patient or patients. This role provides continual bedside observation to assigned patients, ensuring their safety and intervening as necessary to prevent physical harm to patients who might be at high risk due to confusion, delirium, self-destructive behavior, or a high predictive factor of falling. The Constant Observer collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure prompt intervention to maintain patient safety.

Requirements

Must possess effective interpersonal skills
Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions
Must be able to work variable shifts, holidays and/or weekends
Must be able to transport self to alternative work sites
Within 90 days of hire completes all .Edu courses on duties of the Constant Observer and the .Edu courses on restraint and seclusion
Completes hospital approved training in managing patient behaviors and de-escalation techniques
Constant Observers providing patient care must have completed all applicable Competencies within 90 days
CPR Certification

Nice To Haves

High School Diploma/Equivalent
Knowledge of hospital environment desired
Previous hospital and/or health care related experience preferred
Bilingual, English/Spanish helpful

Responsibilities

Remain at patient bedside at all times
Remove visible hazards and/or potentially unsafe equipment from the immediate environment
Report unsafe/broken equipment or conditions to immediate supervisor
Accompany patient to procedures/tests/therapy as needed
Promptly refer to supervising RN any signs or symptoms that may indicate a change in patient’s condition
Assist in calming or reorienting patient in cases of agitation or confusion
Communicate in a positive professional manner; develops and asks questions which open up the dialogue
Provide clear, direct and specific instructions or information to others
Listen with patience and empathy
Observe and respect of patient’s right to privacy
Maintain quiet environment
Adhere to professional conduct/dress
Maintain orderliness of patient rooms
