About The Position

Brooklyn Service Leader: Elevate Patient Dining and Support $3M Retail at SUNY Downstate Sodexo is seeking a dedicated and service-driven Hospital Patient Services Manager to join our team at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. A 250-bed facility known for its excellence in patient care and innovation. This leadership role reports directly to the Food Operations Manager and oversees a team of approximately 20 union employees, playing a key role in supporting Sodexo’s mission to deliver exceptional food and nutrition services that enhance the patient experience. This role will also support retail managing $3 Million in revenue. As the Patient Services Manager 2, you will play a vital role in ensuring that every patient receives compassionate, high-quality service during their stay. You will lead and inspire frontline teams, foster collaboration across departments, and help maintain a culture centered on quality, safety, and care excellence. The Hospital Patient Services Manager will be the leader for service excellence, focusing on patient satisfaction, team management, and financial support.

Requirements

  • Supervisory Experience: Minimum of 2+ years of management or supervisory experience, preferably within food services in a hospital or large institutional setting.
  • Union Environment Comfort: Demonstrated comfort and ability to effectively manage, motivate, and lead a unionized workforce.
  • Patient-Centric Focus: A passion for delivering compassionate care and proven experience driving exceptional customer/patient service results.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of food safety standards (HACCP) and operational compliance requirements within a healthcare setting.
  • Communication & Agility: Excellent professional communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office Suite and experience with healthcare food management systems (e.g., patient tray tracking software) is a plus.
  • Minimum Education Requirement - Associate's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum Management Experience - 2 years
  • Minimum Functional Experience - 2 years work experience in food or culinary services including restaurants, fast food, vending, catering services, institutional services, mall food courts, etc.

  • Retail Acumen: Experience supporting or managing high-volume retail operations is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Patient Services: Oversee all aspects of patient meal delivery, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to dietary and clinical requirements; drive initiatives to consistently improve patient satisfaction scores (e.g., Press Ganey).
  • Team Leadership & Union Management: Directly manage, schedule, and inspire a team of approximately 20 union employees; ensure positive labor relations, consistency in policy application, and professional development of staff.
  • Retail Support: Collaborate with the retail team to support the management of $3 Million in annual retail revenue, focusing on operational consistency and customer satisfaction within the café environments.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure strict adherence to all food safety, sanitation (HACCP), and regulatory compliance standards required by the hospital and Sodexo.
  • Operational Efficiency: Support the Food Operations Manager by assisting with inventory control, cost management, and ensuring operational effectiveness across patient and retail services.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Foster strong, collaborative relationships with nursing, clinical dietitians, and other hospital departments to integrate nutrition services seamlessly into the overall patient care model.
