About The Position

The Patient Service Technician (Phlebotomy) is responsible for providing high-quality patient care through the accurate collection, processing, and handling of laboratory specimens. This role serves as a critical front-line position supporting laboratory operations and ensuring patient satisfaction, specimen integrity, and compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record
  • Completion of a basic phlebotomy training program with classroom and hands-on experience or relevant work experience requiring phlebotomy
  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology examination
  • Ability to complete required driver safety training upon hire and periodically thereafter

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service while maintaining professionalism and patient confidentiality
  • Collect blood specimens from ambulatory and bedridden patients using venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks
  • Collect throat culture swabs and provide clear instructions for patient-collected specimens (e.g., stool and 24-hour urine samples)
  • Process laboratory specimens according to testing requirements, including centrifugation, serum/plasma separation, and temperature control
  • Accurately register patient demographics and physician orders into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Ensure correct patient identification, diagnosis verification, and specimen labeling
  • Communicate test-related information to physicians and clinical staff as appropriate
  • Identify and resolve specimen-related issues, escalating concerns to supervisory staff when necessary
  • Rotate between a minimum of three laboratory collection sites; independently open and close sites as required
  • Perform occasional STAT specimen collections at nursing homes, patient residences, or physician offices
  • Participate in an on-call rotation per contract requirements
  • Maintain inventory by ordering supplies and stocking phlebotomy and storage areas
  • Perform daily cleaning, safety checks, and routine maintenance of phlebotomy rooms and equipment
