About The Position

The Patient Navigator-Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)-Cancer Clinic works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to provide developmentally appropriate and age-specific direct and indirect patient care in a fast-paced outpatient cancer clinic and infusion center serving patients eighteen years of age or older with suspected or confirmed malignancies or hematologic disorder(s). This role performs designated procedures and treatments which require knowledge and technical expertise within the LVN scope of practice and in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. The Patient Navigator recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of complications and/or allergic reactions immediately to the RN, MD or NP. They exhibit mission-focused thinking and understand the sensitivity of cancer diagnosis and express kindness when communicating with patients facing the unknown of a serious critical illness. Responsibilities also include orienting patients to the clinic routine and preparing patients for examination, assisting MD or NP with examination and procedures as requested, and ensuring insurance authorizations, tests results, appropriate coding, and other required information is available for the provider for review. The role involves following-up on designated case management and navigation activities as requested by the RN, MD or NP, demonstrating flexibility, and willingly floating to other areas as assigned. Performs other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a school of vocational nursing
  • Minimum six months experience as an LVN or one year of experience as a Medical Assistant (MA) in a physician back-office setting
  • Active California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • California Intravenous (IV) Therapy certification and Blood Withdrawal certification required within 90 days of hire
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge of oncology/hematology disease process and treatments
  • Able to read, write legibly and speak in English with professional quality
  • Use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, electronic event reporting program, established organization electronic medical record
  • Operate and troubleshoot equipment utilized for position
  • Perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions
