About The Position

UPMC Carlisle is seeking a Full Time Patient Care Technician for their Emergency Department. This role is for patient care providers or healthcare students looking for career growth. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs a variety of patient care duties, including assisting with patient procedures and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients. The PCT is also responsible for completing medical record documentation, reporting equipment malfunctions, and contributing to universal unit activities like responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, and adhering to safety policies. Establishing professional relationships and effective communication with patients, families, colleagues, and other departments is crucial. The PCT provides feedback to the Registered Nurse (RN) regarding patient care, reports changes in patient status, and provides patient and family instruction under the RN's direction. The position is 36 hours per week, year-round, on a Day Shift (7:00am - 7:00pm), with requirements for every other weekend and every other holiday. The title and starting pay rate may vary based on years of experience.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
1-year of general healthcare experience OR
Enrollment in PT/OT/PA/RN program or related healthcare training program with completion of a least one clinical rotation OR
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
Successful completion of basic information system training.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
Act 33 with renewal.
Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.

Nice To Haves

Microcomputer experience preferred.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrythmia and NG tube clamping and removal.
Routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
Perform point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs).
Perform simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections.
Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
Suggests and supports changes within the department.
Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges.
Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.
