About The Position

This posting will be used to fill multiple Patient Care Technician (PCT) positions within the Neurology/Neurosurgery (H8) and the Cardiovascular/Medical Specialties (F8) units at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The PCT is a trained member of the unit-based team who performs patient care tasks and duties that do not require a license, professional judgment, or intervention. The PCT works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and must pass required competencies. They adhere to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures, standards, and guest care guidelines. The H8 Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit is a 30-bed inpatient unit providing comprehensive quality care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric neurology and neurosurgical patients. Services include pre and post-operative care for procedures like craniotomy, spinal decompression, brain stimulation, and treatment of cranial and spinal infections, as well as care for stroke, seizure monitoring, and other neurological disorders. The F8 Cardiovascular/Medical Specialties unit is a 30-bed adult unit specializing in the care and treatment of patients from Cardiology, Cardiothoracic (CT), Structural Heart, Surgery, and Vascular Surgery teams. All new Patient Care Technicians are required to complete 5 weeks of training Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM after being hired.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong work ethics and accountability.
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs. to waist height.
  • Must pass the required competencies.
  • Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman.
  • Previous Patient Care experience in acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains patient report and has on-going communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition; Informs nurse of patient requests or complaints.
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed.
  • Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader.
  • Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care.
  • Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members.
  • Follows through on delegated patient care activities.
  • Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition).
  • Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards.
  • Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems.
  • Serves as resources person to support department members in performance of duties.
  • Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
