About The Position

This position is for a full-time Patient Care Technician (PCT) on the Night Shift within the H7 Medical Oncology Unit at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The PCT is a trained member of the unit-based team who performs patient care tasks and duties that do not require a license, professional judgment, or intervention. The H7 Medical Oncology Unit features 30 private rooms and delivers advanced therapies to a diverse range of medical oncology and family medicine patients. This environment allows nurses to develop skills in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, management of various IV central access devices, symptom management related to disease processes and treatments, and emotional support and palliative care. The unit also offers learning opportunities in all aspects of medical-surgical nursing, supported by a strong interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers. The PCT works under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses and must pass required competencies, adhering to Department of Nursing standards, UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures, and guest care guidelines. All new Patient Care Technicians are required to complete 5 weeks of training Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM after being hired.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to follow oral instructions
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong work ethics and accountability
  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs. to waist height
  • Must pass the required competencies
  • Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR)

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman
  • Patient care experience in acute care setting
  • Prior PCT experience

Responsibilities

  • Obtains patient report and has on-going communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition
  • Informs nurse of patient requests or complaints
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
  • Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed
  • Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader
  • Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care
  • Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members
  • Follows through on delegated patient care activities
  • Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition)
  • Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards
  • Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems
  • Serves as resources person to support department members in performance of duties
  • Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention
  • May perform other duties as assigned
