Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association within 30 days or hire.
  • Successful completion of Hospital Patient Care Sitter course prior to working a shift as a patient sitter.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of Safe Patient Handling equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides constant observation and monitoring of assigned patients to ensure safety and prevention of injury.
  • Receives report from the RN/Charge RN, including any patient specific behaviors to monitor.
  • Courteously greets patients and their visitors, identifies self, and explains purpose utilizing AIDET communication model.
  • Observes and reports to the RN/Charge RN all patient concerns or changes in condition.
  • Promptly calls for assistance as needed.
  • Provides care within trained job responsibilities.
  • Assists patient to restroom and stays with the patient in order to keep the patient safe. Walks patient in corridor as needed.
  • Does not leave patient unless relieved by another staff member.
  • Notifies RN/Charge RN if tubes, IV, catheter, etc. become disconnected.
  • Reports defective equipment to RN/Charge RN.
  • Accompanies the patient to other areas of the hospital for diagnostic tests or upon transfer to other units.
  • Utilizes appropriate patient handling equipment according to patient’s care plan.
  • Transports patient equipment and patient belongings as required with the patient.
  • Maintains a safe orderly and well-equipped environment.
  • Keeps patient room neat and orderly.
  • Evaluates patient’s environment for possible hazards and removes the hazards.
  • Washes hands before and after patient contact and follows personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
  • Follows isolation procedures according to the Infection Control Policy.
  • Competently utilizes technology to document as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the use of unit technology i.e. call systems, bed controls and TV controls.
