Cleveland Clinic’s J5-2 Thoracic Surgery Stepdown Unit has a unique, exciting and fast-paced environment and is dedicated to delivering excellent patient care. J5-2 specializes in esophagectomies, thoracotomies, hiatal hernia repairs, bilateral lung volume reduction, open-heart surgery preparation and congenital chest abnormality repairs, conducts procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis and Claggett's Window dressing change, and treats patients for heart failure, chest pain and cardiac arrhythmias. Nurses on this unit commonly use chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Jejunostomy tubes with tube feeding, Jackson Pratt drains, and PCAs (patient-controlled analgesics). A caregiver in this position works nights, 7:00pm—7:30am.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Nursing students: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it during your new hire period

Nice To Haves

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)

Responsibilities

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN.
  • Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.
  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
  • Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
