About The Position

Provides financial counseling to inpatients, their guarantors, and select outpatient groups, while gathering appropriate socioeconomic data relevant to each account. The role ensures financial readiness and support by coordinating a variety of tasks related to patient registration and financial clearance.

Requirements

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent – Required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a business office, healthcare provider, healthcare-related business, or a related industry (e.g., insurance), with an emphasis on third-party payor requirements – Required
  • Combinations of Shands-specific work experience related to patient demographics, admissions/financial arrangements, billing and collections, patient records processing, or similar, with direct public contact, may be substituted for experience
  • Working knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology – Required
  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, recognize and react to changing priorities, make timely and accurate judgments, communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, and work independently – Required
  • Proficiency in applications and demonstrated ability to work with multiple computer systems – Required
  • Exceptional verbal, analytical, and written communication skills – Required
  • Must be adaptable, tactful, and able to work well under pressure
  • Understanding of the “first impression” nature of the position, including appropriate dress, attitude, and patient-focused concern

  • Licensure / Certification / Registration: CPAT – Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Establish and/or confirm medical record identification numbers and complete patient registration.
  • Conduct detailed financial screening and analysis for patients and guarantors.
  • Verify insurance coverage or other third-party payer information.
  • Obtain precertifications on behalf of multiple billing entities.
  • Collect deposits and co-payments as required.
  • Facilitate revolving credit applications and sponsorship referrals when applicable.
  • Obtain necessary signatures and supporting documentation from patients and guarantors.
  • Coordinate financial issues with internal departments (e.g., billing, admissions) and external agencies.
  • Address or appropriately refer non-financial concerns of patients to the proper department or agency.
