About The Position

This Pathology Technician role at Sanford Health involves providing technical assistance in laboratories, assisting technologists, technicians, pathologists' assistants, and pathologists. Key duties include handling equipment, maintaining the work area, stocking supplies, and assisting with reference lab work such as packaging, mailing, tracking, and report filing. The position also includes training and onboarding new employees. Within the Histology/Gross Laboratory, responsibilities include obtaining biological samples, preparing tissues for processing and examination under the supervision of pathologists, and potentially performing complex histological procedures like grossing, embedding, microtomy, and staining for diagnostic tissue slides. In the Clinical Laboratory setting, the technician will collect, prepare, and process specimens, assist with laboratory activities, prepare supplies, and may be responsible for entering laboratory orders and results. Ensuring the accuracy and quality of laboratory data in a safe and professional environment is crucial. The role may also require performing waived tests and phlebotomy. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or other related field that includes 30 combined semester hours of biological science and chemistry

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance in the laboratories
  • Perform laboratory duties to assist technologists, technicians, pathologists’ assistants and/or pathologists
  • Handle related equipment including maintenance
  • Clean work area and stock supplies
  • Assist in reference lab work including packaging, mailing, tracking, and report filing
  • Train and onboard new employees
  • Assist in obtaining biological samples for study (within Histology/Gross Laboratory)
  • Prepare tissues for processing and examination under the direction and supervision of pathologists (within Histology/Gross Laboratory)
  • Perform complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis (within Histology/Gross Laboratory, may perform)
  • Collect, prepare and process specimens (within Clinical Laboratory setting)
  • Assist in performing laboratory activities and other assigned tasks (within Clinical Laboratory setting)
  • Aid in preparing laboratory specimens and supplies (within Clinical Laboratory setting)
  • Enter laboratory orders and results (within Clinical Laboratory setting, may be responsible for)
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of laboratory data in a safe and professional work environment (within Clinical Laboratory setting)
  • Perform waived tests and/or phlebotomy (within Clinical Laboratory setting, may be required to)
