About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This position involves receiving and preparing tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. The role requires performing complex histological procedures including grossing, embedding, microtomy, and staining to create tissue slides for diagnosis. The individual will be responsible for reviewing slide quality, maintaining and repairing lab instruments, disinfecting the work area, and stocking supplies. Ensuring all lab safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards are met is crucial. The role demands self-discipline, good judgment, critical and independent decision-making, and problem-solving skills while adhering to established standards of practice. Interaction with various client populations may be required, and the individual will perform routine duties across all areas of the Histology Laboratory. Collaboration and respectful interaction with other laboratory and health care personnel are expected. The position also involves assisting in writing and reviewing departmental procedures and participating in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences
  • Possess an HHS (Health and Human Services) approved certification, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in their field of work, or must be registry eligible upon hire and receive certification (Histology Technician (HT) or Histology Technologist (HTL)) within twelve months

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prepare tissue specimens for routine and special examinations
  • Perform complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis
  • Review slide quality
  • Maintain and repair lab instruments
  • Disinfect work area and stock supplies
  • Ensure all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met
  • Work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice
  • Utilize critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem solving
  • Interact with all ages of client population
  • Perform routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory
  • Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care
  • Assist in writing and reviewing current and new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures
  • Take part and actively participate with quality assurance and performance improvement activities associated with the laboratory
