The Pathologists' Assistant acts independently under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor, Surgical Pathology. This role involves a wide variety of tasks related to processing human surgical pathology specimens, including gross description and dissection, instruction and training for residents and student interns, handling autopsy suite tasks, and providing technical and administrative support as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Clinical Pathology required.
  • Related experience 1-2 years required.
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy, tumor staging guidelines and medical terminology.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to approach wide variety of surgical specimens.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of technical expertise.
  • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree Pathologists' Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Dictates gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens (i.e. type, size, weight, color and anatomical characteristics).
  • Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Reviews cases at sign-out with a pathologist when necessary.
  • Provides instruction to resident trainees, Pathologists' Assistant student interns, and medical students on gross anatomy, appropriate specimen orientation, tissue selection, cryotomy, and staining for intraoperative diagnosis, as well as gross description, dissection, and sampling of surgical pathology specimens and frozen section specimens.
  • Handles prospecting and reporting responsibilities for autopsy suite tasks.
  • Assists with laboratory tasks as required, including technical and administrative support.
  • Assists in collecting and submitting tissue for a variety of needs, including controls, teaching, research and tissue/tumor banking.
  • Evaluates tissue to sample for frozen section, cuts and stains frozen sections adequately for telepathology review.
  • Oversees specimen storage in the surgical pathology area, keeps records and discards specimens as necessary.
  • Ensures that proper and legal authorization has been obtained to perform a postmortem examination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
