Starting salary $110,000 Job Summary Acting Independently under Supervision of the Technical Supervisor, Surgical Pathology. Performs a wide variety of tasks related to processing human surgical pathology specimens, including: - Gross Description and Dissection: Submitting appropriate diagnostic sections and, when necessary, reviewing cases at sign-out with a pathologist. - Instruction and Training: Providing instruction to resident trainees and Pathologists' Assistant student interns on gross anatomy, appropriate specimen orientation, tissue selection, cryotomy, and staining for intraoperative diagnosis. - Autopsy Suite Tasks: Handling prospecting and reporting responsibilities. - Technical and Administrative Support: Assisting with laboratory tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Clinical Pathology required or Master's Degree Pathologists' Assistant preferred
  • Related experience 1-2 years required
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy, tumor staging guidelines and medical terminology.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to approach wide variety of surgical specimens.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of technical expertise.
  • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Dictates gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens (i.e. type, size, weight, color and anatomical characteristics).
  • Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Instructs both formally and informally pathology residents, PA students and medical students in the gross description, dissection, and sampling of surgical pathology specimens as well as frozen section specimens.
  • Assists in collecting and submitting tissue for a variety of needs, including controls, teaching, research and tissue/tumor banking.
  • Evaluates tissue to sample for frozen section, cuts and stains frozen sections adequately for telepathology review.
  • Oversees specimen storage in the surgical pathology area, keeps records and discards specimens as necessary.
  • Ensures that proper and legal authorization has been obtained to perform a postmortem examination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
