About The Position

Incumbent serves as Part Time for the Tippecanoe County Treasurer, responsible for assisting customers at front counter and various other office functions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or HSE.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare correspondence, court/legal documents, and various detailed reports as required.
  • Ability to properly operate standard office equipment and software systems, such as computer, bill counter, receipt printer, calculator, scanner, copier, and telephone.
  • Ability to file, post, and mail materials.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to State requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Administers bankruptcies received from federal bankruptcy courts, including reviewing court documents, researching computer records, calculating tax judgements, and penalties, posting payments, preparing, processing and filing claims in court, and entering on computer.
  • Processes bankruptcy court action, including reviewing documents, legal counsel, filing amendment claims on objected motions and filing a Proof of Claim form, corresponding with trustees, attorneys, and debtors as needed, preparing estimated tax statements on computer, and maintaining related records.
  • Research and file claims with the Circuit Court on all estates filed in the Tippecanoe County Courts.
  • Obtains and researches lists of public paid employees for delinquent property taxes and reports to individual employers to start garnishment proceedings. Maintains master lists and reports paid receipts back to employer to stop proceedings as payments are received.
  • Enters and maintains notes in tax software system; calculates and enters re-charged tax and penalties into software and processes judgement payments; research tax issues when needed.
  • Files property tax clearance forms and updates the alcohol & beverage commission list of permits.
  • Assists the Treasurer with signing up taxpayers for emailed tax statements.
  • Maintains records of lawsuits filed against the County Treasurer.
  • Assists Property Tax/P-card Bookkeeper with research and updating lender files
  • Keep track of office supplies and notifies the Treasurer when inventory is low.
  • Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information and assistance or directs person to the appropriate individual or department; assists with front counter duties including printing duplicate tax bills and other property reports; processes various payments from taxpayers/departments and provides receipts.
  • Assists with tax statement sorting/mailing; enters notes in tax software for returned mailings; evaluates homestead status and notifies Auditor of possible ineligible properties; forwards returned items according to office policy.
  • Prepares daily bank deposit for cash received for payment; maintains cash drawer; processes credit card payments; receipts direct deposits from the bank; scan checks for remote capture deposit; balances all transactions to software daily to ensure accuracy; verifies check scans for accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs various clerical functions daily and as needed; verifies checks printed against check register; posts non-property tax receipts, such as innkeepers and Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) on appropriate logs.
  • Assures tax compliance and calculates estimated taxes when necessary for mobile home permits and alcohol clearance forms; calculates estimated tax when applicable, prepares and issues permits and forms when in compliance.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
