Department: College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Reports To: Manager, STEM Lab LOCATION: Green Bay, WI – Room SC 367 STANDARD HOURS: June 3rd, 2026 – July 31st, 2026 Wednesday’s 12:30pm - 3:30pm AND Friday’s 8:30am - 3:30pm STARTING RATE OF PAY: $15.00 per hour Please also attach the following to your online application: A recent CV listing relevant course work and experience One letter of recommendation A one-page cover letter describing why you are interested in this internship and what you would bring to the research team POSITION SUMMARY Under the guidance of the principle investigator (PI) students will be immersed in an undergraduate research experience where they plan, design, and execute experiments. The experiments will assist the PI with gathering data for eventual publication. The students will be trained in various laboratory techniques including cell biology, molecular biology, and virology. Retroviruses are RNA viruses that infect the host utilizing a DNA intermediate. Over evolutionary time, some of these retroviruses have incorporated into germ cells and became part of the genome of their host (became endogenous). Sometimes, these endogenous viruses can become released, causing a new infection. The Aim of this lab is to determine how the endogenous viruses become released.

Requirements

• For Laboratory Science Technology (LST) admitted students: Must complete, with a C or better, minimum of 3 science (instructional area of 806 or 506) courses within the LST curriculum prior to enrolling in your summer laboratory internship experience course.
• For non-LST admitted students: Completion of 3 science courses (instructional area of 806).

• Students admitted to the Laboratory Science Technology (LST) program must enroll in: Laboratory Intern Experience 10-506-137, to receive credit for your program’s internship requirement.
• Laboratory Science Technology students must complete the online activities and discussion boards of the one-credit online course.
• Students not admitted to the Laboratory Science Technology program must enroll in: Laboratory Science Experience 10-506-139, This is a one-credit course and is not eligible for financial aid.
• Students in this course are not required to complete the online activities and discussion boards.
• Should a student be admitted to the LST program at a future time, this course cannot be utilized for the LST internship experience program requirement.
• An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Keep an accurate scientific notebook per the requirements of the lab
• Execute protocols according to procedure
• Design experiments with relevant controls
• Utilize safety training according to OSHA and lab regulations
• Assist with planning experimentation via weekly lab meetings
• Clean-up and maintenance of the laboratory setting including but not limited to: cleaning glassware and equipment; returning equipment and supplies to their storage location(s) prior to leaving the laboratory; communicating if/what additional cleaning requirements exist to the PI.
