About The Position

Part-time instructor positions (as defined by State Board Policy, BP 3-10) exist to create and maintain a teaching and learning environment that empowers students to be successful. Part-time instructors work under the direction of their respective Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Division Dean. Pikes Peak State College maintains a pool of qualified part-time instructors. Part-time instructors will be selected to support departmental requirements. Part-time instructors may be employed to teach courses, conduct presentations or other service activities when current instructors and faculty are not available. Surgical technology instructors teach students the duties and responsibilities of functioning as a surgical technologist in a hospital or surgery center. The instructor will teach students how to prepare an operating room, provide pre-operative patient care, and assist a surgeon during surgery or another medical procedure or operation. Instruction takes place both in a classroom and in a clinical setting to give students the first-hand experience they need to learn the skills and expectations of being a surgical technologist. This position requires proof of current Certified Surgical Technologist from NBSTSA. Must maintain technical knowledge in the field through active participation in professional development organizations and events throughout the year. Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment. All work must be performed in the State of Colorado. Applicants must have availability to teach evening and weekend courses.

Requirements

  • Completed Associate Degree in Surgical Technology.
  • Graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency (CAAHEP).
  • Possess a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
  • Two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
  • Documented experience in three or more surgical specialties.
  • Must be effective in teaching and knowledgeable in the subject matter as documented by appropriate professional credential(s)/certification(s), education, and experience in the designated content area.
  • Current CPR for providers from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to demonstrate or articulate a commitment to serving underrepresented populations or populations affected by societal inequities.
  • Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment. All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.

Responsibilities

  • Meeting all scheduled classes/labs/clinics and providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the college and the Department Chair's approved course outline.
  • Using teaching methods and media designed to reach students of varying educational and experiential backgrounds to allow each student the opportunity to master the objectives of the course.
  • Informing students of course requirements through a course syllabus, including: specific objectives, means of attaining objectives, and methods of instruction and grading.
  • Evaluating students on a continuing basis to allow them to be aware of their own progress.
  • Participate in department and/or college level assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and career/technical courses and programs as required.
  • Recommending instructional materials, textbooks, appropriate instructional equipment, and the Library supportive reference materials.
  • Maintaining and submitting records as required by policy and procedures.
  • Promoting affirmative action equal opportunity concepts within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintaining required credentials, licenses, certification as appropriate, and proficiency and up-to-date knowledge in the subject matter area.
