About The Position

The Summer Internship Program offers students work experience and professional guidance in several areas of the organization. Interns contribute to projects that support departmental work, develop new skills, and gain insight into their career interests. Interns will have the opportunity to explore behind the scenes of Battery Park City Authority’s (BPCA) innovative vision and design, complex public space management, leadership in sustainable practices, and commitment to outstanding public resources. As with all positions, this position will continually exemplify and promote the core values, mission, and culture of BPCA. The Parks Operations Division is comprised of the Horticulture, Maintenance, and Shared Services Departments, which collectively maintain the 32 acres of open spaces and amenities within Battery Park City (BPC). While each department has distinct responsibilities, the division shares operational standards and practices that guide the management and care of these public spaces. The Parks Operations Intern will support projects focused on strengthening and improving operational systems across the division. Working closely with the Project Manager, the intern will assist with creating, documenting, and communicating operational procedures. This work will include updating and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operational protocols, and contributing to the development of an Operations and Maintenance Manual. Additional responsibilities may include supporting division initiatives such as record management, assisting with tabling programs and permitted events, and collaborating with the Sustainability Intern on projects that align with the division’s broader goals. The Parks Operations Intern would support the Vice President of Parks Operations and work closely with the Project Manager and Working Groups in BPCA. Job responsibilities are centered on supporting operational safety, consistency, and compliance across the Parks Operations Division.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate college student interested in public parks, zero waste, environmental sustainability, and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the review, development, and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and operational protocols to ensure consistent practices across departments.
  • Supporting the documentation and organization of operational processes to contribute to the development of a comprehensive Operations and Maintenance Manual.
  • Working with the Project Manager and departmental staff to gather information on existing workflows, procedures, and best practices used in day-to-day park operations.
  • Assisting with the standardization and formatting of operational documents to improve clarity, accessibility, and compliance with divisional standards.
  • Supporting record management and maintaining organized documentation related to operational procedures and updates.
  • Collaborating with internal working groups and supporting cross-divisional initiatives, including coordination with the Sustainability Intern on projects aligned with the division’s goals.
