About The Position

The Parks and Urban Forestry Supervisor is responsible for performing formal supervisory duties for technical Parks Maintenance and Urban Forestry staff that could include assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; preparing job preparation bid permits; conducting safety and quality inspections; controlling work productions and efficiency rates; assisting with managing the departmental budget; and researching and ordering necessary equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscape maintenance, urban forestry, parks and recreation, or related field AND 5-7 years of parks maintenance or urban forestry experience including 2 years of supervisory experience OR a combination of education, training and experience which would provide the required skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job as determined by the department.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Has a strong knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles.
  • Understands budgetary principles to effectively monitor department resources.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices is essential for planning and overseeing park and forestry projects.
  • Must be familiar with applicable City codes and ordinances related to parks, forestry, and related areas.
  • Has an understanding of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations is crucial for compliance.
  • Possesses effective Supervisor skills necessary for supervising and evaluating employees.
  • Adept at prioritizing and assigning work to ensure efficient operations.
  • Is skilled in supervising department operations to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Can analyze complex problems and present effective solutions to address challenges in urban forestry and park management.
  • Skilled in preparing and recommending regulations to improve parks and urban forestry practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for interacting with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others, to exchange information effectively and receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and assign parks and urban forestry crews including prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained.
  • Ensuring employees follow policies and procedures and maintain a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Make hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Prepares, reviews, updates, and maintains a variety of correspondence, records, and files including preparing job bid permits and other departmental forms.
  • Performs safety and quality inspections regarding subordinate work and related projects.
  • Assists with the department budget including making recommendations, monitoring spending and inventory, and creating logs and records of purchases.
  • Research and order necessary equipment, parts, or outside vendor repairs.
  • Participate in special department assignments including controlling work production and efficiency rates by appropriately assigning duties, projects, and responsibilities.
  • Closely monitor quality control and assist with the City's Tree Program.
  • Travel to job sites and other City locations to conduct essential department and City business.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
