About The Position

Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) is dedicated to providing convenient, safe, accessible, and attractive parking facilities that serve students, faculty, staff, and visitors. PTS also has responsibility for a comprehensive internal transportation system on campus and external links to public transit. The Department provides parking enforcement, safety escort, and assistance programs, and has a Rideshare office that promotes transportation alternatives, including carpooling, bicycling, and public transportation, in support of the President's Climate Commitment.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED - High school diploma or equivalent
DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State
Valid California driver's license and proof of insurance
Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn how to use applicable parking-related equipment and automated systems is essential.
Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to parking and traffic control.
Ability to learn the campus layout and parking facilities.
Ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems.
Working knowledge of parking-related equipment.
Ability to prepare standard parking incident reports in a clear and concise manner.
Working knowledge of applicable radio systems.
Ability to observe and recall details and incidents, as well as detect and respond appropriately to potentially hazardous situations.
Ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals including the campus community and the general public.
Ability to appropriately handle parking monies received.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn how to use applicable parking related equipment and automated systems
Comprehend and enforce campus parking regulations and the California Vehicle Code
A minimum of 3-6 months of related experience
During employment, the employee must obtain and maintain Defensive Drivers Training certification

Responsibilities

Patrols campus streets and parking areas and checks the parked cars to ensure they bear proper parking permits and/or otherwise are legally parked; issues citations to unauthorized or illegally parked vehicles.
To properly enforce the parking regulations, the Officer must patrol on foot in order to fully inspect the permit, or lack thereof, on each vehicle. Vehicles in time zones must also be 'chalked' or marked for proper enforcement
Prepares a daily log and fills in the activity section as events take place throughout the shift. Turns in the completed log at the end of each shift.
Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the campus during special events, peak traffic hours, periods of emergencies, or as directed by a HEERA manager.
Provides general information and campus directions to members of the public and performs such related duties as assigned.
Performs battery jumps, safety escorts, vehicle unlock services, money runs, and emergency assists as dispatched by the Department.
Responsible for raising gate arms, replacing broken gate arms, and unjamming parking meters.
Staff the information booth during breaks, lunches, staff shortages, and/or as instructed by a HEERA manager.
At the visitor information booth, the parking officer issues appropriate visitor, student, faculty, staff, or vendor daily permits upon receipt of the full parking fee, and must balance cash collected with register tape. Also issues daily medical permits.
Responsible for knowing and performing shift opening and shift change, closing duties at the Visitor Information Booth. This includes the "x"ing and "z"ing of the register, and changing tapes and ribbons if needed.
Must have detailed knowledge of the parking regulations in order to dispense correct information to the public and campus community.
Must have detailed knowledge of the Department's General Orders and Special Administrative Instructions.
Must be alert to unusual events/persons in the parking lots and report the same to the Dispatcher.
Works in conjunction with Community Service Officers (CSO) as assigned.
May be assigned to special projects as directed by a parking lead or PTS HEERA manager, including, but not limited to, parking lot inventory, special projects or assignments, serving on committees, reviewing signage on campus, supporting department and campus events by assisting in the physical logistics, and other matters related to the duties of a parking officer.
