About The Position

The position of Park Specialist is a full-time, non-exempt position. Under the supervision of the Foreman, the Park Specialist is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of park grounds, turf, ballfields, buildings, special use facilities, vehicles, equipment and aquatic system operations. This is an at-will position.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must possess a Valid Illinois Driver’s License and be able to obtain a Class “C” license within 6 months of employment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain State of Illinois Pesticide Applicator license within the first year of employment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Certified Pool Operator certification within the first year of employment
  • Must possess First aid, CPR and AED certifications within 6 months of employment
  • Regularly required to talk, hear or read
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; and over 50 pounds with assistance
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
  • Employee must exhibit good safety awareness and judgment
  • Employee must exhibit cooperative and receptive personality traits, especially when dealing with the public

Responsibilities

  • Perform park maintenance including but not limited to general carpentry, tree pruning and removal, trail repairs, pothole patching, fence repair, sign installation, roofing, graffiti removal, litter pick-up, garbage removal, awning installation and removal, and playground repairs
  • Perform snow and ice removal operations
  • Perform horticulture maintenance including but not limited to mowing, weeding, raking, mulching, weed whipping, planting, pruning, watering, flower bed maintenance, turf repairs, and pesticide application
  • Perform fleet maintenance including vehicle and equipment inspections, service and repairs
  • Execute athletic field and court maintenance including but not limited to dragging infields, setting bases, lining ball fields, securing and relocating various goals, installing and removing court nets
  • Perform facility maintenance including but not limited to plumbing repairs; HVAC preventative maintenance; building and furniture repairs; painting; cleaning and restocking restrooms; disposing of trash and emptying garbage cans; wiping down tables and chairs; sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors; cleaning picnic shelters, grills and fire pits
  • Responsible to assist with pool system and splashpad operations including but not limited to preventative maintenance, start-up, proper operation, water tests, chemical safety, code compliance, ongoing maintenance and repairs, and shut-down
  • Ability to successfully and safely operate equipment required to complete assigned tasks including but not limited to front end loader backhoe, Bobcat, forklift, snowplows, mowers and chainsaws
  • Ability to safely and within legal guidelines, operate vehicles to and from daily assigned work sites
  • Ability to work from oral and written directives
  • Thoroughly and accurately complete all work orders and daily activity logs
  • Adhere to and enforce all Park District safety, personnel and administrative policies, procedures and ordinances
  • Demonstrate and support Park District customer service standards
  • Work early mornings, evenings, nights and weekends as necessary
  • Assist other Park District departments as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Attend professional educational and safety trainings
  • Uphold safety and risk management strategies in support of and compliance with Park District policies, procedures and ordinances
  • Familiarity with and effective implementation of the Employee Safety Manual, Emergency Response Plan, and Crisis Management Plan
  • Assist with emergency procedures and building evaluation
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment when performing duties, based on job tasks
  • Promptly report hazardous conditions, accidents and injuries to supervisor
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and uphold OSHA rules
  • Thoroughly and accurately complete safety inspection checklists, report findings and promptly address issues, as directed
