About The Position

The Greenway Conservancy is seeking a versatile and motivated Park Operations Technician to help maintain The Greenway, one of Boston's most vibrant public spaces This hands on roll will tackle everything from repairing hardscape features and assisting with public art installations to troubleshooting equipment and maintaining intricate fountains The Greenway is a 17-acre linear park in the heart of Boston, roughly half planted and half hardscape, featuring diverse pavement and masonry, seven water features, a custom carousel, more than 250 lights, and numerous benches and park furnishings If you enjoy solving problems, working with your hands, and being part of a dynamic team, this is the role for you The Greenway Conservancy is committed to providing a park environment that is welcoming to racially, culturally, and economically diverse residents and visitors You can read more about our mission, vision, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion on our website

Requirements

  • Ability to work in a busy public park setting and commitment to a positive public experience
  • Strong aptitude in mechanical and technical equipment and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to be a reliable team member who contributes to a positive team environment
  • Analytical skills to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and technical equipment anomalies
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn and advance one's skill set
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer proficiency in common office programs such as Microsoft Office, Gmail and Google Calendar
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather, kneel or stand for periods of time, and able to lift 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive Conservancy vehicles in downtown Boston to move supplies is required Vehicle training will be provided

Nice To Haves

  • Degree from a technical school or relevant education, work experience or apprenticeship
  • Two years of work experience in building or landscape construction and/or maintenance
  • Experience in the operation, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Experience in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of advanced lighting systems including associated controllers
  • Experience in operation and maintenance of fountains or swimming pools including programmable controllers
  • The following certifications are a plus: hoisting license 1C/2A, Certified Pool/Spa Operator license, OSHA 10 Construction Safety certificate, OSHA 30 Construction Safety certificate The Conservancy will financially support the successful candidate in obtaining any of these not already held
  • Masonry knowledge and skill

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Maintenance Department in its daily operations in maintaining, repairing and cleaning all fountains, lighting and electrical equipment, Conservancy facilities, vehicles and equipment, masonry, site furnishings, artworks and structures on The Greenway
  • Assist the Maintenance team in providing guidance and support to other Conservancy departments, this includes requests for power, lighting and water, securing sites with barricades, and liaising with contractors
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe and proper manner
  • Effectively communicate issues with various hardscape elements with the Maintenance department staff
  • Assist in the safe and effective completion of tasks performed by interns and Volunteers, who assist with maintenance projects about 3-5 times per year
  • Perform other assigned duties as they relate to the operation and care of the parks
