About The Position

Supervises and performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled work tasks in the development, beautification, and maintenance of scenic, recreational and other landscaped areas; maintains and operates passenger type power mowers; may greet visitors and gives historical and botanical information concerning the site; and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and one (1) year of work experience in: the care, maintenance, and beautification of landscaped areas; and/or the operation or repair of passenger type mowers.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent).
  • Applicants will be required to qualify on a written examination.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and participates in the raking, trimming, fertilizing, and watering of lawns, plants, shrubbery in a scenic or recreational and other landscaped areas set aside for public use
  • Propagates plants and shrubs from seeds, cuttings, and roots
  • Sprays insecticides and herbicides in order to eradicate harmful insects and weeds
  • Cleans and makes repairs to comfort stations, shelters, pavilions, gymnasiums, swimming pools, water fountains, barbecue pits and other facilities in public parks and recreational areas
  • Repairs and/or supervises the repairs to comfort stations, shelters, and other structures
  • Supervises and participates in the building and repairing of wire, wooden and stone fences and walls, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, fireplaces, and pits
  • Supervises and participates in the operation, maintenance, and repair of passenger type power mowers
  • Plans landscaping operations and modification of existing plans
  • Supervises the maintenance, preparation and lining of all park areas for various athletic games and events
  • Operates motor vehicles, light motorized, or power equipment and tools as required
  • Gives information to the public concerning the historical background of the sites, procedures and policies governing the use and reservation of certain sections within the recreational area
  • Identifies the various ornamental plants and shrubbery of the area
  • Enforces rules and regulations applicable to the protection of public property and public safety
  • Contacts superiors or local authorities and prepares reports on observed violations
  • May testify in court and may supervise others as assigned during construction activities
  • Performs other related duties as required
