About The Position

The Paraprofessional II – Special Education provides assistance to teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students; performs classroom clerical tasks; and assists students by meeting special health care needs and developing students’ daily living and behavioral skills.

Requirements

  • All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • High school diploma or a recognized equivalent
  • Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position and have completed one of the following: completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher
  • The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment
  • Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios
  • Ability to use basic office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, fax, etc.) and Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment
  • Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

Responsibilities

  • Assist and supervise students as they attend general education classes and provide support according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs
  • Implement learning and behavior plans that meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs
  • Implement classroom management techniques, provide small group instruction to students within the classroom, and provide classroom interventions and a variety of activities
  • Complete safety care training
  • Monitor individual or small groups of students in a variety of settings
  • Operate physical education equipment and supervise playground activities using standardized methods
  • Administer assessment instruments under the direction of teachers
  • Report incidents to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures and state law
  • Collect student data as related to EIP, FBA/BIP or as directed by teacher
  • Administer first aid and adhere to safety practices
  • Participate in various meetings as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions, present information to others
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  • Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, read a variety of manuals, and write documents following prescribed formats
  • Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions; work as part of a team by collaborating with own and other work units; be attentive to detail
  • As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
