About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Radiology is seeking a Paramedic. GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION: Under direct supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), Nurse Manager, or designee, assists with patient care services. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist technologists and physicians with procedures within interventional radiology department. Setup sterile trays. Use proper sterile techniques including skin preparation. Assist in the use of complex medical equipment during interventional procedures, including, but not limited to angioplasty devices, stents, drains, and filters. Establish rapport with patient and provide information about how the exam is performed and what is required of the patient. Under direct supervision of a Radiology staff physician and/or Department of Radiology Nurse Manager/designee Assists with basic patient care services in all areas within the Department of Radiology including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, Interventional Radiology, and other areas as needed. Assist in the collection of venous blood samples. Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response/education. Manages clinical visits for patients and assists providers during clinic visits. Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan. Develops, coordinates, and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care. Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Follows universal precautions. Demonstrate acceptance of responsibility; pride in work performed; flexibility in acceptance of assignments while consistently maintaining professional behavior and appearance. Follow policies and procedures in accordance with regulations set forth by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Nursing, Department of Radiology, the University of Iowa, and the Iowa Department of Public Health Paramedic Scope of Practice. Requirements

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) procedures.
  • Knowledge of drug and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of most common emergency drugs and their uses and usual doses.
  • Knowledge of institutional and unit policies, processes, and forms.
  • Ability to perform patient care as delegated.
  • Ability to transport monitored patients.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Ability to maintain and stock inventory.
  • Ability to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, patients and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to treat patient issues with confidentiality.
  • Ability to complete an assignment under time-sensitive and highly stressful situations while maintaining composure and focus.
  • Ability to complete an assignment and follow-through with a problem to solution within the scheduled period.
  • Ability to recognize their own errors and those of others and check with appropriate source for clarification of problems.
  • Ability to precept EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and Paramedic students.
  • Graduation from high school
  • Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services
  • Current course completion card in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart association
  • Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year advanced life support field experience as an emergency response paramedic, or current ER experience with a history of advanced life support field experience.
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS);
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS);
  • Critical care Paramedic (CCP); Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS).
  • Prefer applicants with an Associate degree in Paramedic.
