Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of accredited Paramedic Program
  • Experience: Minimum 3-5 years full-time with ALS/911 service
  • License/Certifications: Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Paramedic in Iowa. Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Critical Care Paramedic – CCP (required within 3 years of hire). Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter. Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office. Basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Excellence/Patient Care Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Performs delegated tasks within scope of practice (under the current Iowa CCP scope of practice) after the patient has been evaluated by registered nurse, NP or PA.
  • Scope includes: Basic & advanced airway and ventilation monitoring and management – Cricothyrotomy percutaneous and surgical Circulatory augmentation device monitoring Hemodynamic monitoring – central/arterial Initiate ventilator/BiPap/CPap Chest Tube monitoring and management Medication administration Gastric lavage and gavage; Eye lavage Oxygen therapy and monitoring Cardiac monitoring Cardioversion, defibrillation, and transthoracic pacing Hemorrhage control IV and IO insertion, maintenance, and monitoring Bedside glucose monitoring Obtains venous blood samples, urine samples Assists in tube thoracostomy; monitors and manages the chest tube & thoracic draining system Monitors internal pacemakers Monitors and accesses arterial lines Monitors and accesses central venous lines Assists in monitoring and maintaining intracranial pressure devices PCT duties and responsibilities
  • Notifies the RN of any pertinent changes in patient condition or disposition.
  • Completes documentation to assure an accurate record of patient’s care.
  • Interacts effectively, confidentially, and cooperatively with patient, families, physicians, and pre-hospital, and hospital personnel regarding patient care.
  • Transports patients via ambulance as needed.
  • Clinical Excellence/Patient Education Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
