About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time (40 hours/week) paralegal position located in our Augusta Office. This individual will provide in-office support for Assistant Attorneys General in the Criminal Division. The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic about a career in a government setting, be self-directed, highly organized, efficient and accurate with excellent writing skills and the ability to work independently. The candidate must have strong computer skills and be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills for working with attorneys and staff at all levels, the courts, the public, co-workers and supervisors and have strong communication skills. A strong work ethic is imperative.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency
  • graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction and one (1) year of paralegal experience.
  • Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Document management; information management.
  • Drafting letters, pleadings, proposed orders and memoranda.
  • Tracking case data, caseload distribution, maintaining calendars for criminal hearings and court appearances and deadlines.
  • Open, close and archive files.
  • Working with investigators and organizing investigation files.
  • Coordinate Grand Jury with court personnel and investigators.
  • Preparing and organizing hearing exhibits.
  • Communicating with witnesses, preparing witness subpoenas, arranging for service of process.
  • Compile, organize and prepare legal documents, pleadings, discovery and other similar materials.
  • Analyze finanical records, file documents including notes, correspondence and pleadings
  • Proofreading and editing documents.
  • Applying knowledge of Maine criminal law.
  • All other responsibilities assigned by the Division Chief.
