About The Position

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. This position offers a salary range of $51,580 - $72,159, with potential for advancement up to $79,673 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and will not exceed $72,159. The OAG, Maryland Department of Health (MDH), is seeking dedicated, detail-oriented candidates for the position of Paralegal II. The MDH’s mission is to promote and improve the health and safety of all Marylanders through disease prevention, access to care, quality management, and community engagement. The MDH is a large, dynamic agency with a $21 billion budget in fiscal year 2026 and over 10,000 employees located at headquarters in Baltimore and throughout the State’s 24 local health departments. The OAG MDH team is comprised of 47 Assistant Attorneys General, including the Principal Counsel, and 7 support professionals. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted, and collegial legal environment while serving the public through the important work of the OAG and MDH. The Paralegal will directly support six Assistant Attorneys General and Principal Counsel with an emphasis on all aspects of litigation support. The Paralegal, along with other dedicated support professionals, also provides general administrative support to the office. A hybrid telework schedule is available, which requires employees to be in office two days one week and three days the following week , in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
  • The position requires the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a keen attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Applicants must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with database systems and familiarity with digital evidence management programs.
  • Familiarity with MDEC, PACER, litigation procedures, court rules, filing requirements, and document management practices.
  • Familiarity with case management and document tracking systems.
  • Experience with Adobe Pro, Google Suite, and Microsoft 365 applications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with legal research related to public health laws, regulations, policies, and administrative rules.
  • Research, drafting assistance, and formatting of legal documents such as notices, subpoenas, motions, compliance letters, and administrative pleadings.
  • Compile exhibits for hearings, enforcement actions, and litigation.
  • Maintain case files and databases and track litigation deadlines.
  • Communicate with courts, administrative tribunals, external counsel, and other government agencies regarding case-related matters.
  • Assist attorneys during litigation proceedings.
  • Provide general administrative support to office.
  • Manage calendars, schedule meetings, prepare agendas, and coordinate logistics for hearings, reviews, and internal meetings.
  • Draft, format, and proofread correspondence, memoranda, reports, and official documents.
  • Maintain organized electronic and physical filing systems for office records.
  • Distribute and track incoming and outgoing legal mail and ensure timely follow-up on assigned matters.
  • Assist with technological needs of the team.
