Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Paraeducator assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in an assigned educational program. Key responsibilities include helping children meet the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), attending to students' physical and health needs, monitoring and reporting student progress, and performing various clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and management. This role is distinct from other student support positions as it primarily focuses on attendant physical duties to ensure equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities, assisting with basic health needs as trained, and supporting the classroom teacher in creating engaging academic environments. This position offers a pathway for further professional development as an Instructional Support Specialist or a certificated position. Specialized skills may be required for specific assignments, such as for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students (requiring proficiency in signing systems like ASL, PSE, MCE) or Visually Impaired students (requiring Braille reading/demonstration, operation of specialized equipment, and assistance with mobility).
