About The Position

Provide instructional support under the supervision of the special education teacher in a special education environment or as required by an individual education plan (IEP). A paraeducator will provide support to students with hearing and/or vision impairments in a general or specialized classroom.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent
Associate’s degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited university, or satisfactory results on an AZ state-approved competency exam
CPR/First Aid (certification provided)
Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer and related software
Satisfactory criminal background check

Responsibilities

Instruct, within proximity to the teacher, individual students, or small groups of students to reinforce material or skills initially introduced by the teacher
Translate, when required, (both oral and written) for parents, students, staff, and others
Assist students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to severe medical conditions and/or physical limitations (e.g., toileting, feeding, dressing, suctioning, tube feeding, and emergency rescue medication, etc.) for the purpose of allowing students to function in a school environment
Implement, under direction, behavioral plans developed by a team consisting of parent and school personnel for the purpose of assisting students in modifying behaviors that conflict with a positive academic and social environment
Assist students with various physical, emotional, and academic needs, adhering to the guidelines of student's I.E.P
Assist with emergency rescue medications if necessary
Assist in the provision of services in a small group or 1:1
Administer immediate basic first aid and medical assistance for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured students
Assist with assessments and data collection under the supervision of the certified teacher
Operate and care for equipment used for instructional purposes
Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, lunch periods, and field trips
Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about a student
Participate in meetings and in service training as required for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving knowledge and skills beneficial to assisting in the classroom
Maintain the confidentiality of protected student and staff member information even after no longer employed
Be flexible and perform other duties relating to general job function as assigned by supervisor
Accept responsibility for students’ well-being and safety while they are in employee's care
Be alert to and report the possibility of any substance use, child abuse, or dangerous situation based upon daily observation
Assist in maintaining a quiet and orderly classroom environment
Follow district policies as outlined
Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position
