About The Position

We currently have an opening for a Paper Machines Superintendent based out of our location in Port Townsend, Washington. This position will have the opportunity to demonstrate ownership and lead initiatives designed to drive continuous and step-change improvement in our Paper Machines department. This position is responsible for creating a strong safety culture and work environment, executing, and continuously improving the quality, productivity, efficiency, and cost of the operation. The Paper Machine Superintendent must be a strong leader with a knowledge of the paper-making process, paper machines, supporting equipment, and troubleshooting skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Paper Science, or related field with five plus year’s operations experience within the paper industry including three-plus year’s supervisory experience
  • Ten-plus years of progressive and practical paper-making experience including five-plus years of paper machine supervisory experience will be considered.
  • Experience working in a team environment with a union contract.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates safety as a core value and establishes a safe working environment by actively leading the safe execution of work and in identifying/eliminating hazards.
  • Participates in department and mill initiatives for improving safety.
  • Provides leadership to machine personnel to ensure overall safe operations.
  • Identifies developmental needs and facilitates training of machine personnel.
  • Plans and controls production performance.
  • Monitors compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures quality systems are in place and comply with customer specifications.
  • Coordinates efforts with maintenance and technical departments.
  • Creates an environment of respect, trust, accountability, and excellence.
  • Challenges and engages co-workers to improve mill performance and lower costs.
  • Reviews and analyzes production data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develops and executes strategic plans including input to the mill capital plan to increase overall machine efficiency.
  • Tracks and improves quality and customer relations.
  • Reduces waste from off-quality production and/or losses.
  • Manages the department budget, including identifying cost-saving measures wherever possible.
