The successful candidate will provide inpatient hospice and palliative medicine services across UW-affiliated hospitals in Madison, including a community academic hospital, an academic quaternary care center, and a lower-acuity academically affiliated hospital. The physician will serve as the attending of record for the inpatient consultative palliative care service, leading interdisciplinary teams in the assessment and management of patients with serious illness and complex symptom and communication needs. Responsibilities include providing expert consultation to primary teams, delivering patient- and family-centered care, and coordinating closely with interdisciplinary team members including advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, and chaplains. The physician will also serve as the primary attending provider for patients admitted to the palliative care or hospice service, overseeing medical management and care planning for patients with advanced illness. A key component of the role includes supervision and education of Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows, internal medicine residents, and medical students, with active engagement in bedside teaching, case review, and mentorship of trainees across clinical settings. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the successful candidate will contribute to the academic mission of the Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care and the Department of Medicine. Faculty participate in program-wide initiatives, including quality improvement, educational programming, and interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at advancing palliative care delivery. This position is full or part time, 75%-100% This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and repeated every four years. The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at UW-Madison includes more than 60 faculty, 31 Advanced Practice Providers, and 19 Fellows. The division's faculty lead cutting-edge basic and translational research programs in classical and malignant hematology, cellular therapy, cancer biology, cancer prevention and screening and medical oncology. The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology & Palliative Care is part of the Department of Medicine and the NCI- designated UW Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Division is active in all phases of cancer research, from prevention, screening, cancer therapy, development and evaluation, survivorship and palliative care. The Palliative Care Program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison includes eight inpatient physicians and three advanced practice providers who deliver specialty palliative care services across three hospitals in Madison in collaboration with a robust interdisciplinary team including chaplaincy, social work, and nursing to provide comprehensive, patient- and family-centered care for individuals living with serious illness. The associated Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship trains four fellows annually and is recognized for its strong interdisciplinary education, robust clinical experiences across inpatient and outpatient settings, and commitment to developing leaders in hospice and palliative medicine. Faculty and staff are dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, scholarship, and teamwork while advancing compassionate, high-quality care for patients and families facing serious illness. Clinical research is conducted in the UWCCC by 18 multi-disciplinary Disease Oriented Teams and is supported by the UWCCC Clinical Research Central Office on the main campus. Over 170 UWCCC investigators regularly enroll patients to therapeutic intervention trials at our UWCCC clinical sites. We are members of the NCCN, ECOG- ACRIN, Alliance, BigTen Cancer Research Consortium, Wisconsin Oncology Network (WON) and Wisconsin Association of Hematology and Oncology (WAHO). The candidate will have also access to many shared resources and opportunities to collaborate with basic, translational and clinical researchers at the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), the VA Hospital and throughout the UW-Madison campus. Administrative duties including committees and community service may be added as appropriate to the interests of the successful candidate.
