About The Position

The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea, a dedicated long-term care facility committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to our nation's veterans, is seeking to add a Painter I to their team. The successful candidate will assist with and participate in the application of paint, varnish, wallpaper and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces; inspects buildings, furniture and other fixtures to determine the need and advisability for painting and the type of finish to use and perform related work as required. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Participates in the preparation of surfaces for painting or papering and in the application of paint, wallpaper and other finishes. 2. Assists in preparing surfaces for finishing by washing, dusting, sanding, puttying and other means. 3. Assists in applying paint, varnish stain, wallpaper and other finishes to walls, floors, furniture, building exteriors and other surfaces by means of a brush or spray equipment. 4. Mixes and matches paints and stains and blends colors. 5. Assists in the erection of ladders and scaffolding. 6. Inspects furniture and building interiors and exteriors to determine the need and advisability for painting and the type of finish to use. 7. Estimate the amount of materials needed and the cost for a job. 8. Confers with supervisors and department heads regarding the scheduling of work, the handling of emergencies and the feasibility of installing painting equipment and materials in the area in order to ensure that needs of the agency are met expeditiously and at a convenient time. 9. Assists in the lettering and painting of signs and in the removal and replacement of broken window glass. 10. Assists in the cleaning of equipment and the removal of debris from area which has been finished. 11. May exercise functional supervision (i.e. over certain but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1 – 5 laborers or inmate workers. 12. Additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices used in the trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods of preparing wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement, and other materials and surfaces for painting.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Considerable ability to understand and execute general oral and written orders without immediate supervision.
  • Considerable skill in the application of paints and other finishes by brush or air gun, and in mixing and matching paints.
  • Considerable experience as a journeyman painter.
  • Ability to determine the need for painting and the type of finish to use.
  • Knowledge on how to estimate and order necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to keep accurate production records.
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance above the ground.
  • Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in painting work, or (B) the substitution below.
  • A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at the high school level or higher with a major in painting may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Rigger's License issued by the Department of Labor and Industries (Division of Industrial Safety) may be required.
