About The Position

Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation is partnering with Thomas Edison High School and seeks to hire a Patient Care Tech (CNA) Student Summer Extern. The Post-Acute Care Services Patient Care Tech summer externship program begins with an agreed-upon orientation date in June 2026 and runs full‑time for eight consecutive weeks. This program provides exposure to clinical and learning environments that enhance students' preparation for a nursing career. The primary focus is to develop foundational skills as a care provider. Students are assigned to a clinical unit and paired with a mentor nurse who supports their learning, answers questions, and identifies hands‑on learning opportunities. During the program, externs have the opportunity to develop key organizational, clinical, and problem‑solving skills, including: • Understanding how nurses set priorities, communicate with team members and other professionals, and structure their daily assignments. • Identifying the resources available to support nursing care. • Observing the roles of various care team members and how the interdisciplinary team collaborates. • Strengthening critical thinking abilities and practicing close observation in the clinical setting.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required (Thomas Edison High School Students only)
  • Active Maryland Board of Nursing CNA certification required; certification must be obtained by the program start date in June.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; certification must be obtained by the program start date in June.
  • Must be open to working all shifts (day or night), including weekends.
  • Must be able to work full-time (36 hours) a week for the full 8 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Student CNA Extern, fulfilling all CNA duties and performing advanced nursing skills under the direct supervision and guidance of an RN.
  • May be counted in staffing as applicable per entity. This role is not to be used as a companion position.
  • Participate in an 8‑week immersive externship designed to provide graduating seniors with exposure to exciting clinical career pathways within our organization.
  • Work alongside healthcare leaders through a structured program that includes hands-on learning, observation, networking opportunities, and professional development activities.
