About The Position

The Packaging Machine Operator (PMO) is responsible for overseeing packaging room operations to ensure production schedules are met while maintaining product quality, safety, and efficiency. This role involves operating, troubleshooting, and performing routine maintenance on packaging machinery, as well as supporting food safety programs and collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize production processes.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 2 hours).
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Comfortable working in hot, cold, dusty, or noisy environments.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting high-speed packaging machinery.
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to train and lead team members effectively.
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to accurately document production data and follow record-keeping best practices.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and relay key information during shift changes.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in food packaging or manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of SQF, HACCP, and GMP standards.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance or machine calibration.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on packaging machines, scales, tape machines, and date code machines.
  • Ensure correct packaging film is loaded for each product according to the production schedule.
  • Maintain and adjust machine settings to ensure efficiency and product quality.
  • Monitor and regulate packaging materials while following FIFO procedures.
  • Identify and resolve issues impacting production flow, coordinating with cross-functional teams as needed.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records.
  • Perform Critical Control Point (CCP) monitoring to prevent allergen cross-contamination.
  • Conduct routine quality checks, including bag seals, weight, date codes, and product appearance.
  • Collaborate with Quality Control, Maintenance, and Warehouse teams to address quality or integrity concerns.
  • Follow all GMP, HACCP, and SQF guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with preventive control measures (PCPs) and CCPs.
  • Assist with training and mentoring new packers and operators.
  • Communicate effectively with Shift Managers, Leads, Packers, Stackers, QC, Warehouse, and Maintenance teams.
  • Provide clear shift changeover updates, including production status, overflow levels, and machine issues.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Follow all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safety regulations.
  • Wear required PPE, including safety eyewear, hearing protection, gloves, and hairnets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area.
  • Identify and report safety concerns or hazards to management.
  • Adjust date codes, replace ink ribbons, and ensure print legibility.
  • Assist with routine checks and follow proper rejection procedures.
  • Monitor product flow, prevent jams, and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Adjust height and position as required.
  • Manage overflow and maintain accurate documentation for traceability.
