About The Position

GCX Corp is seeking a skilled and innovative Packaging Engineer to lead packaging design and testing efforts for consumer products across internal and external manufacturing locations. This role is pivotal in supporting new product introductions, supplier development, and optimization of existing packaging programs. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise, CAD proficiency, and a passion for excellence to a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Position: On site position with schedule flexibility to support packaging design and testing efforts as well as business needs for consumer products in both internal and external manufacturing locations. The Packaging Engineer will be located at El Paso, Texas facility. A person with a technical background on package design for new products development introduction, and transfer, support to current and new suppliers to develop new programs and optimization of current ones, CAD proficiency (for products and components manipulation for packaging purposes). Required skills paired with a passion for excellence and an entrepreneurial mindset will be important keys to success for the right candidate. Responsibilities (but not limited to): The Packaging Engineer is responsible for packaging development in support of new products, cost savings projects, process development, and manufacturing/supply chain initiatives. This role combines technical knowledge, project management, and cross-functional team communications skills to provide a strong source of packaging capabilities. Participate in new supplier selection and development. A technical leader on the team that works to advance all aspects of the project. Actively helps develop and advance business processes related to the role. Own Engineering Change Notification (ECNs) activities related to packaging design efforts. Provides technical support to customers, suppliers, and other departments. The Packaging Engineer role in the organization is a technical role that includes, but is not limited to: Design, develop, coordinate, and commercialize new packaging for product development projects. Interact across all levels & functions and participate in project planning activities. Research package options, manage project time & risk, produce prototypes, conduct tests, integrate manufacturing processes, engage suppliers, and overall communications. Create complete and accurate packaging specifications reflecting materials that can be produced consistently and run efficiently on packaging lines. Formulate and execute experimental design and conduct validation testing to predict package performance, durability, reliability, and consumer function. Stay abreast of relevant market and consumer trends in packaging seeking opportunities to align product portfolios with innovative packaging concepts and methods. Collaborate with suppliers, R&D, Quality, Operations, Manufacturing & Finance to initiate and execute packaging-centric continuous improvement projects geared towards improving quality, lowering cost and/or increasing capacity. Troubleshoot packaging issues on production lines to assist with identifying and implementing solutions. Communicate implications of material and structure changes to manufacturing plants and co-manufacturers and ensure appropriate testing and its successful introduction. Participate in RFQ process led by Supply Chain Management (SCM) including assembling RFQ package technical content and quote reviews for technical alignment with requirements. Participates in supplier selection process led by SCM. Participate in item and product transfer project schedule/plan development. Socialize packaging designs, CAD, drawings, etc. with suppliers. DFM collaboration, review, and acceptance with suppliers for package designs and manufacturing processes. Collaborate with GCX SQE’s conducting DFQ with suppliers. Participate in verification process development and reconciliation of results led by GCX SQE. Conduct validation and verifications test as needed. Support final assembly packaging V&V activities. Participate in team meetings internally and externally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Package Engineering or an alternate relevant technical discipline (required).
  • Minimum 8-10 years (preferred) of packaging development and project management experience as part of a cross functional team.
  • Applied knowledge in areas of corrugated, paperboard cartons, labels, flexibles/laminates, various print methods.
  • Familiarity with packaging testing methodology (i.e. ISTA & ASTM).
  • Excellent communication skills verbally and written.
  • Experience writing packaging specifications.
  • Proficiency in CAD systems such as Creo and SolidWorks or similar.
  • Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage several projects at a time.
  • Ability to self-direct and take constructive action in ambiguous situations.
  • Proficiency in New Product Development (NPD) processes including Verification and Validation, and Qualification phases.
  • A resourceful and collaborative leader in cross functional teams addressing issues of complex packaging processes.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Possesses strong analytical skills, judgment, and problem-solving ability.
  • Capable of analyzing complex situations, understanding the ‘big picture’, and determining effective strategies and tactics.
  • Understanding component design and basic manufacturing processes for various CNC manufacturing methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Intermediate understanding of engineering drawings and ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Basic understanding of QC metrology tools and methods.
  • Quality-oriented mindset, strong sense of urgency & attention to detail.
  • Fluency with mechanical components and assembly drawings and work instructions.
  • Experience working with external partners, such as contracted resources, suppliers, and manufacturer
