About The Position

As a Package Development Engineer, you’ll support metal packaging projects across the entire development cycle. This includes designing, validating, and improving physical products that end up in millions of hands every day. Your responsibilities will include: Project Leadership Manage multiple packaging development projects from concept through completion, ensuring timelines, budgets, and technical goals are met. Coordinate cross‑functional teams such as R&D, manufacturing, quality, operations, marketing, and suppliers. Drive project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, documentation, and communication. Apply structured risk management to minimize technical and commercial risks. Travel where your projects are taking place, expect up to 50% in year one; typically 30–40% thereafter. Technical and Innovation Work Lead research, early‑stage ideation, and feasibility activities for new metal food container concepts. Develop, test, and troubleshoot packaging designs with a hands‑on mechanical and materials engineering approach. Create prototypes using internal and external resources; analyze performance and translate findings into actionable improvements. Support process enhancement, material innovation, and continuous improvement across Silgan’s facilities. Conduct trials at manufacturing plants; refine package performance through testing, data analysis, and iteration.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in a related technical field such as Packaging, Industrial, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with interest in container design, testing, and commercialization.
  • Proven experience leading complex projects, ideally with budgets over $1MM.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize teams toward achieving technical goals.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and an ability to innovate with materials, processes, and packaging systems.
  • Experience producing prototypes using internal and external resources.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to create technical reports, case studies, and presentations for internal and external partners.
