Requirements

Associate degree from a two-year veterinary technology program with accreditation from the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA)
Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination (administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) when required by the state)
Current Washington State Veterinary Technician License with credential in good standing required
Required to be RECOVER certified
Required to be Fear-Free certified
Ability to handle and maintain sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Knowledge of veterinary hospital practices and procedures
Strong organizational and time management skills including managing multiple priorities
Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Interact with a variety of clients and employees in a professional, caring, compassionate, and tactful manner
Knowledge of the generic and brand names, common uses, and side effects of drugs utilized in a veterinary practice
Knowledge of medical equipment and terminology
Basic proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Practice Management software (PIMS)
Basic written, verbal, and active listening communication skills with a customer oriented approach
Basic analytical, critical thinking, judgement, and problem-solving skills
Understanding of physiology and pharmacology to give appropriate patient care

Provide professional, efficient, quality medical care and exceptional service to clients while maintaining maximum productivity
Ensure training is aligned with hospital protocols/policies and state regulations
Lead training session on clinical skills, emergency care, anesthesia, and diagnostics
Provide technical assistance and support to the veterinary team during emergency procedures
Act as a resource for troubleshooting complex cases, technician procedures, and equipment use
Ensure clinical competency technicians and assistants, providing hands-on training in areas such as anesthesia, patient monitoring, diagnostics, and emergency interventions
Oversee daily flow of ER and assign trained staff to cases to help make the day run smoothly with coordination with the ER doctor for the day
Enforce team member lunch breaks while keeping the flow of the ER moving
Ensure exemplary patient and client care is being provided
Maintain accurate records of team member skills lists, RECOVER and Fear Free certification, and online training to ensure all team members are participating and are being completed
Clearly communicate staffing shortages or callouts to team members
Provide ER training to both existing and new team members
Report training progress and performance outcomes to hospital leadership
Ensure established ER and ICU hospital protocols are being followed
Assist with de-escalation in the event of an upset client in the ER/ICU department
Restrain patients utilizing fear-free techniques
Create and maintain patient medical records and documentation
Obtain and prepare various samples including blood, urine, and fecal samples for diagnostic testing
Perform laboratory tests on samples using in-house IDEXX laboratory machines
Fill controlled and non-controlled prescriptions medications following Washington State laws
Administer medications in various routes following the Five Rights of Medication Administration
Instruct team members on various types of venipuncture such as intravenous catheters, central lines, sampling lines, and blood draws in the ER
Follow sedation and anesthesia protocols
Perform CPR following RECOVER guidelines
Perform advanced skills such as nasogastric tube, central line, nasal cannula and PICC line placement
Administer and monitor all transfusions
Perform ultrasound guided cystocentesis
Demonstrate critical thinking skills in a fast-paced ER environment
Monitor critical patients in an ER setting
Perform accurate medical math calculations of CRIs, injections, and medications
Ensure patient cleanliness
Maintain and monitor patient chest tubes and surgical drains
Maintain proper documentation using Cornerstone and Instinct
Monitor hospitalized patients for changes in vitals or mentation, notifying the DVM immediately
Enteral and parenteral medication administration
Support a practice environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork and ensure the delivery of quality, compassionate, effective, and efficient health care to pets
Comply with all practice policies, quality assurance guidelines, and standards of care
Assist in finding shift coverage if a callout occurs on shift
Communicate effectively with clinicians, hospital leadership, and staff
Assist department staff with daily, weekly, and monthly checklists
Assist with department inventory management
Collaborate with Technician Manager, ECC Supervisors, and ICU Supervisors
Adhere to all hospital protocols and policies
Assist in creating solutions to ER specific patient safety reports
Perform other duties or projects as requested by the Hospital Administrator and Medical Director
Eligible for overtime LVT shifts when authorized by the Hospital Administrator
Check your email daily, at the minimum at the start and end of your shift
Respond to important/critical messages promptly when on shift
Make call backs, answer messages from emails, phone calls, and CSRs
Log all communications in Cornerstone (verbal and written)
Assist with implementing all ER standard operating procedures (SOPs) in cooperation with the ER/ICU Department Head and the hospital leadership team
Assist Hospital Administrator and Department Head in overseeing quality assurance and maintain related records according to established policies/procedures
Attend regular meetings with the ER/ICU Department Head and service DVMs as well as leadership meetings, team meetings, ICU rounds, and other meetings as requested
Provide day-to-day support for the team and facilitate/understand when escalation to the Hospital Administrator or others is necessary
Assist the ER/ICU Department Head, service doctors, and service staff with instruction of technical skills, safety protocols, and basic procedures to interns and externs
Liaise between the department and other hospital staff when needed
Develop and maintain a written account of all conversations where necessary (e.g. performance meeting, HR concerns)
Provide feedback and documentation to the Hospital Leadership Team
Assist with team member reviews and team member check-ins in conjunction with the Hospital Administrator as requested
Provide feedback to Hospital Administrator and ER/ICU Department Head in relation to department staff
Participate in team member evaluations or performance discussions when requested by the Hospital Administrator
Assist service DVMs in the training of staff and implement SOPs
Communicate effectively with staff, doctors, and hospital leadership
Encourage positive, solution-based conversations and discourage negative unproductive talk amongst team members
Maintain current knowledge and certification
Identify learning needs in self and initiate actions to address these education needs
Use resources available for learning
Attend or complete continuing education activities to maintain certification
Take direction, follow verbal and written instructions, and understand that not all instructions are found in a SOP
