About The Position

This position involves performing a variety of duties including the inspection of existing outside plant cable facilities and new cable construction. The apprentice will assist the Outside Plant Technician in regular inspections of existing fiber optic cable routes on both the EKN fiber ring network and cell site fiber optic “spurs”. A key aspect of the role is working closely with contractors to ensure all safety and RUS standards are met, and helping to update staking sheets to reflect any changes to existing cable routes. The apprentice will also be responsible for contacting utility companies in the event a violation is observed and working with them if a violation is found with EKN cable. Collaboration with Fiber Technicians to find and repair EKN fiber breaks is also required, as is working with the Outside Plant Technician and utilities on scheduling and completion of make-ready work. Finally, the role assists the Outside Plant Technician in testing all fiber optic cable to ensure high quality before installation.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Minimum 1 year experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Basic understanding and/or experience in RUS specifications.
• Good math skills are required at a moderate level of advancement.
• Aware of OSHA safety requirements.
• Basic outside plant cable construction & safety practices.
• Knowledge of industry terminology and general operating procedures relative to one’s own job.
• Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Nice To Haves

• Certified flagging experience is preferable.

Responsibilities
