General Definition: Responsible for the orderly conduct of horses, riders, gate crew, and other participants on the racecourse during training and racing hours. Essential Job Functions: Patrols the racetrack during training hours to look for debris and foreign objects. Opens and closes the racetrack to horse training at designated hours. Must be on the track prior to any horses. Enforces training and equipment regulations on the track including: Enforcing speed limit of the track. Enforcing the direction horses should be going on the track. Ensures that mounts are properly maintained by wearing the correct safety gear including protective vests, helmets, and boots. Escort horses from the saddling paddock through the post parade, warming up and to starting gate at post time in a timely and orderly fashion and will remain on duty until all horses on that program have been returned to their handlers. In the case of a loose horse, the outriders immediately implement safety procedures through radio communications to close the track and flash light or siren until the loose horse is captured. In the case of an injured horse and/or rider, the outriders immediately implement safety procedures through radio communications to close the track and flash light or siren; protect downed horse and rider from other horses and riders; request horse ambulance and/or human ambulance as necessary. Notify personnel of any horses that appear to may have a soundness problem or of unruly horses. Maintain constant radio communications with the track officials and staff monitor track conditions for safety and request maintenance after ambulance(s) leaves the racetrack. The outriders must clear the track for the break in a timely manner. Notifies Stewards if any problems arise on the track. Notifies Stewards immediately as to claims of foul & against whom. Notifies Stewards when races are clear and escorts winning horse back the Winner’s Circle after each race. All other duties as assigned by management
