About The Position

This role is essential in developing educational pathways for outpatient coders, enhancing their expertise and supporting their career progression. As part of the Outpatient Coding Leadership structure, you will create a comprehensive education program focused on coding quality and compliance. The impact of this position extends to conducting audits and quality assurance reviews, ensuring a high standard of coding within the department. Collaboration with various stakeholders and ongoing training will be key to maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of the coding team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or equivalent preferred.
  • Five or more years of complex coding and auditing experience required.
  • AAPC Instructor certification can substitute for work experience.
  • Expert coding knowledge, including guidelines and classification systems.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and healthcare applications.
  • Epic experience preferred.
  • Past experience in training and education in group settings.
  • Certification as a coder through AAPC (COC certified outpatient coder) required.
  • Ability to obtain instructor designation through AAPC within six months.
  • Additional coding certifications highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate activities with educational partners for internal audits and coder assessments.
  • Conduct and oversee Quality Assurance reviews and compliance audits.
  • Develop tailored training programs based on individual coder performance.
  • Create coding procedures and instructional guides.
  • Identify educational needs through staff surveys and organize sessions accordingly.
  • Keep track of ICD-10-CM, PCS, and CPT code updates and changes.
  • Monitor educational progress of coders and inform leadership when requirements aren’t met.
  • Support the onboarding and development of new coders.
  • Identify and recommend improvements in coding practices and procedures.
  • Act as a liaison to other departments for coding inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain coding policies and training materials.
  • Lead training sessions and facilitate learning for coding staff.
  • Regularly assess coder comprehension and their training needs.
  • Encourage professional growth and meet continuing education requirements.
  • Conduct audits to identify documentation and coding issues, implementing training as needed.
  • Stay updated on coding regulations and practices.
