Mountain Recreation is seeking talented individuals to join our Outdoor Recreation department in an assistant role, supporting specialty programs such as mountain biking, archery, stand-up paddleboarding, and other day camp opportunities. This position is part of the Outdoor Recreation Programs Team and plays a key role in assisting with the delivery of high-quality recreation programs in an assigned area to serve our community. Requirements

  • Capability to lift equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and create positive relationships with staff and the public.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older
  • High school graduation or equivalency, or currently attending high school
  • Previous experience working or volunteering with children/youth
  • 1–2 years of experience in outdoor recreation and/or youth-serving programs
  • Any satisfactory combination of experience and education that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification (required).

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language proficiency and cultural literacy (preferred).
  • Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or the ability to obtain this certification prior to beginning employment (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Assist & Support Instruction : Assist in facilitating Mountain Bike camps for 12–15 youth alongside the Lead Instructor, helping ensure an engaging and educational experience.
  • Support Safety & Instruction : Help conduct gear checks, reinforce basic bike riding techniques, and promote trail etiquette while supporting group safety and cohesion.
  • Engage with Families : Greet and interact with families during camper check-in and check-out in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Follow Program Plans : Utilize weekly program folders for designated activities, schedules, rosters, and Risk Management documents.
  • Teach & Facilitate : Support instruction of outdoor recreation skills, assist with team-building activities, and help with individual and group behavior management.
  • Transport Participants : May drive a district van to assist with transporting campers to field sites, as needed if over 18 years of age.
  • Support Risk & Safety Practices : Follow all risk management procedures and assist the Lead Instructor in maintaining participant and staff safety.
  • Support & Learn : Work alongside Lead Instructors and support Instructors in Training to build skills and confidence.
  • Assist with Logistics : Communicate needs related to facilities, equipment, and supplies to program leadership.
  • Deliver High-Quality Experiences : Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external guests.
  • Support Additional Activities : Assist with programs such as rock climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, nature art, and environmental stewardship projects.
  • Collaborate with Partners : Support coordination with recreation departments, school districts, towns, counties, special districts, non-profits, and sports associations.
  • Maintain Equipment & Spaces : Help inspect and maintain program spaces and equipment to ensure a safe and positive participant experience.
  • Assist with Planning : Support curriculum implementation based on program objectives and guidelines.
  • Set Up & Clean Up : Assist with setup, takedown, and cleanup duties as needed.
  • Respond to Emergencies : Follow accident and incident procedures and support the Lead Instructor during emergency situations.
  • Attend Staff Training : Participate in pre-program training to develop skills in youth engagement, outdoor recreation, and teamwork.
  • Follow Reporting Guidelines : Serve as a mandatory reporter and adhere to all reporting requirements.
  • Support Special Events : Assist with events for partner organizations serving mixed-age groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
