About The Position

The Department of Campus Recreation is seeking to fill the position of Spring Break Expedition Leader. Expedition Leaders are responsible for leading extended trips and including (but not limited to) hiking, backpacking, caving, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and mountaineering. This includes driving University vehicles and trailers, teaching technical skills, facilitating positive group development, managing risks, supervising meal preparation, and communicating effectively with co-leaders. Planning and preparation for trips including developing a trip itinerary, menu planning/food prep, requesting/packing equipment, communicating with participants, and completing all paperwork. Complete post-trip tasks including proper cleanup and return of all equipment, post-trip reports, and giving and receiving peer feedback. Must successfully complete the 10-day Outdoor Leadership Training Course and maintain a valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR (or higher) certification. Should have documented outdoor/adventure leadership experience in the form of an experience log and possess the skills, knowledge, and experience to lead trips in at least 1 activity.

Requirements

  • Must successfully complete the Outdoor Leadership Training Course (OLTC) or equivalent outdoor leadership training.
  • Possess (and maintain) valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA) & CPR/AED certification or higher.
  • Documented outdoor/adventure leadership experience (in the form of an experience log) required; applicants should possess the skills, knowledge, and experience to lead trips in at least 1 activity (as demonstrated through completion of activity-specific assessments).
  • Must be able to work extended hours including early mornings and late nights
  • Needs to maintain personal well-being throughout the duration of the trip
  • This job requires you to operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead extended spring break trips, with activities including but not limited to: backpacking, canoeing, caving, fly fishing, hiking, ice climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, mountaineering, rock climbing, standup paddleboarding, and whitewater rafting.
  • Plan and prepare for trips and activities including: develop a trip itinerary create a menu and appropriately prepare/package food (including resupply plans if needed) request and pack all necessary equipment coordinate vehicle logistics complete all paperwork, including development of an Emergency Action Plan prepare participants through effective written and oral communication
  • Manage all logistical and interpersonal aspects of an extended outdoor experience including: drive University vehicles of varying sizes (must pass MVR check) and possibly trailers (training provided as needed) for long-distances teach technical skills related to the activity facilitate positive group interactions and development supervise preparation and cooking of meals communicate and lead effectively with co-leaders manage the risks of the activity according to program guidelines (if necessary) administer first aid treatment and implement emergency response and evacuation
  • Complete all post-trip tasks including: cleanup and return of all equipment complete post-trip report give and receive peer feedback
  • Other additional duties/responsibilities at the direction of the Program Coordinator and/or Assistant Director
