The OSP Line Maintenance & Construction II performs the general labor associated with outside plant line maintenance. You will operate construction equipment which includes, but is not limited to, trenchers, backhoes, end loaders and plows in order to place cable facilities. You will install, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aerial and underground cable facilities within TDS Telecom serving areas. You will perform work in accordance with state and local regulations in a safe manner. Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the North Anson, ME warehouse located at: 2 Elm Street - North Anson, ME 04958. This position can be hired at either an OSP Line Maintenance & Construction I (2025- 28419 ) or OSP Line Maintenance & Construction II (2025- 28420 ) level depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate. Different job postings exist for each of these positions. Requirements

  • 1+ years of construction experience utilizing construction equipment such as a trencher, plow, and backhoe -OR- current military service, or prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 1+ years of telecommunications outside plant experience.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS’s business needs including but not limited to our obligations to our customers and to our customers’ needs.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and remain eligible for DOT requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL.
  • A current CDL is preferred at hire, but TDS will train and certify eligible associates through its in-house CDL certification program after hire.
  • Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Training course curriculum.
  • Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Physical requirements may vary based on company needs: Ability to dig, lift and climb.
  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • May be required to work various/swing shifts as business needs dictate.
  • Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general line maintenance in various weather conditions while utilizing safety fundamentals.
  • Completes fallen tree removals from aerial plant, including right of way tree trimming as needed.
  • Completes DSA structure support repairs (wooden, metal decking).
  • Replaces broken, sets new, and realigns poles as needed – includes reattaching all cables.
  • Performs pole transfers per designated work order requests.
  • Performs all necessary line repairs – strand, lashing wire, guy wires, anchor placing, proper slack placement, etc.
  • Operates construction and other excavating equipment to construct,maintain, and repair outside plant cable facilities.
  • Performs the maintenance, repairs, and placement of new (copper, fiber, coax) aerial and buried cable according to maps, staking sheets and locate markings.
  • Reviews and updates GIS, maps, addresses, as-builds.
  • Sets peds, vaults, and handholes along with marking/labeling fiber optic, copper/coax facilities.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains fiber optic/copper/coax facilities.
  • Identifies location of defective cable using various test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, underground and/or customer cable.
  • Locates cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
  • Performs cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Ensures worksite and landscape is fully restored after project completion.
  • Proficiently operates all test equipment associated with outside plant facilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Trains and monitors personnel as directed by supervisor or team lead.
