About The Position

An individual in this position inspects and makes timely written reports of employee exposures to potentially hazardous work conditions in North Carolina workplaces, and recommends the issuance of citations when justified by the occupational safety and health laws of the State of North Carolina. Travel is necessary to make on-site inspections of safety-related items such as physical hazards and chemical exposures. The types of inspections conducted include complaints, referrals, follow-ups, accidents, fatalities, and general schedule assignments. All inspections are conducted in accordance with the North Carolina Field Information System (FIS) and the Field Operations Manual (FOM) as established for administration of the 1973 Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina.

Requirements

  • understanding of industrial engineering concepts
  • knowledgeable and decisive inconsistently applying the OSHNC standards
  • self-motivated professional
  • outstanding time management and database management skills
  • physically, mentally and emotionally capable of conducting independent inspections
  • excellent documentation and writing skills to write legally defensible reports
  • proficient in keyboarding using word processing programs, i.e. WordPerfect and Microsoft Word
  • excellent verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license is required
  • Must live w/in 50 mile radius of Raleigh field office
  • Bachelor's degree preferably with a major in occupational safety, industrial management or technology, industrial engineering, industrial arts, engineering operations, or a closely-related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections; or Associate s degree in industrial safety and health technology, or a closely-related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
