The Orthotics Technician is a trained member of the orthopaedic team who works with all health care professionals in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities concerning all surgical and non-surgical procedures. This role involves greeting, informing, preparing, and positioning patients for procedures, as well as providing patient and family education. The technician conducts clinical interviews, assesses patient needs based on physician prescriptions, and reads specifications to determine the type of device to be fabricated and the materials and tools required. They apply or remove casts/splints, make orthotic devices by bending, forming, and shaping materials to prescribed specifications, and fit, test, and evaluate devices on patients, making adjustments for proper fit, function, and comfort. Administrative duties include providing patients with insurance and financial responsibility information, completing work orders, billing, and notes, verifying benefits, and documenting in patient records. The technician also triages patient calls, communicates patient needs to certified practitioners or physicians, and maintains the cast room and stock inventory. The position requires excellence in customer service, proficiency in insurance verification/authorization, and strong organizational skills to maintain schedules, return phone calls, and manage stock.
