We have been a leader in sports medicine for more than 40 years, with offices in Somersworth, Lee and Portsmouth. We are the official team physicians for the University of New Hampshire. Are you ready to bring your talent to this team and join us in moving health care forward? We are seeking a full-time (40-hour) Medical Assistant/Orthopedic Tech to join our team. As true partners to our nurses and providers, our Medical Assistant/Ortho Techs have the opportunity to work autonomously at the top of their education and certification while also contributing as an integral member of a collaborative care team. Our practice is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The 40-hour weekly schedule is staggered based on the needs of the practice. In addition, there may be opportunities for cross-coverage at our on-site Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic, which operates Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm. This role encourages flexibility, with the ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed. While we strive to keep employees in their assigned practice and location, team members may be asked to float to other departments within the WHP system as needed. This may occur during staffing shortages or other extenuating circumstances to ensure appropriate coverage and continued patient support. Under the supervision, provides specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions. Assists in the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices, and may also assist in surgical procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • 2-3 years required experience in orthopedics
  • General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
  • Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
  • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] preferred
  • Orthopaedic Technologist Certification [OTC] - National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc. preferred
  • 0-1 year preferred
  • Ortho Tech Certification obtained within 1 year of hire

Responsibilities

  • Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
  • Assist with the application of casts, braces, and prostheses. Requisition, store, and dispense supplies as directed.
  • Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
  • Instruct selected patients in cast care, simple exercises, and crutch or cane use. Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Make splints, slings and foot pieces.
  • May make rounds with doctors of all orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
  • Cut and fashion devices from metal, plastic, leather and wood using equipment and hand tools.
