About The Position

New England Baptist Surgery Center (NEBSC) is currently hiring for a full-time (30 hours per week) ORTHOPEDIC NURSE PRACTITIONER OR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT About us: New England Baptist Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art surgery center providing comprehensive orthopedic care for a range of ambulatory services, including total joint surgery and pain management procedures. Job Description: The Nurse Practitioner / Orthopedic Physician Assistant (NP/PA) plays a vital role in delivering high-quality perioperative patient care in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons. This position is based primarily in the operating room of a high-volume ambulatory surgery center and provides direct surgical support, including first assisting during operative procedures. Responsibilities are exclusively perioperative and include preoperative preparation, intraoperative support, and postoperative management. There are no clinic or office-based responsibilities associated with this role. The ideal candidate has strong orthopedic experience—particularly in total joint replacement—and thrives in a fast-paced outpatient surgical environment with a strong focus on patient safety, efficiency, and teamwork. Interpersonal Relationships: As a representative of NEBSC, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors directly influence the facility’s image and the perception of quality care. The NP/PA is expected to interact with patients, families, physicians, referral sources, visitors, vendors, and colleagues in a friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, and professional manner. This role promotes an atmosphere of teamwork consistent with NEBSC standards, policies, and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioner: Current Nurse Practitioner license required
  • Physician Assistant: Current Massachusetts PA license and NCCPA certification required upon hire
  • Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA registration
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Physician Assistant Studies, or a related field
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Prior experience working in the operating room with orthopedic surgeons required
  • Strong technical and procedural skills in the operating room
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of professionalism, adaptability, and attention to detail
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to formulate plans of care
  • Commitment to patient safety and high-quality outcomes
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in physical examination and perioperative clinical assessment
  • Knowledge of current standards of care, patient privacy regulations, and infection control practices
  • Good visual acuity and accurate color vision
  • Ability to lift, transfer, push, and pull patients in excess of 100 pounds with assistance as required
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use full range of body motion for extended periods
  • Ability to reach, grasp, and perform fine motor movements
  • Ability to speak clearly and hear adequately to communicate with patients and staff
  • Minimal supervision. The NP/PA must be self-directed, clinically independent, and able to function autonomously within the scope of practice.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as first assist to orthopedic surgeons during operative procedures
  • Assist with surgical setup, intraoperative workflow, and room turnover to support efficient case flow
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and respond appropriately during procedures
  • Manage postoperative care in collaboration with the surgical team, including wound assessment, orders, and discharge planning
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding perioperative care as appropriate
  • Document operative and postoperative notes accurately in the electronic medical record
  • Ensure care delivery is consistent with NCQA, AAAHC, and all applicable federal and state regulatory standards
  • Follow established infection control, safety, and quality assurance policies
  • Work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and surgical technologists
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and quality improvement initiatives
  • Perform other duties related to patient care and practice operations as assigned
