About The Position

The Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time exempt (non-hourly) Instructor-Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner. This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinical orthopedic surgery practice. The position will practice primarily out of the UCHealth Longs Peak (LPH) Hospital in Longmont, assisting with orthopedic trauma consults, inpatient care, and surgical assistance with various orthopedic specialty cases. The position is not eligible for tenure. Examples of General Scope of Work This is a position requiring interest in Orthopedic Surgery . The expectation is for gradually increasing levels of independence as their skills and knowledge increase. Consult Assistance Conducts trauma consults at LPH on new orthopedic patients in the emergency room and on the floor. CU Orthopedics is on call for ~30% of calendar days, at this time, including one weekend per month . Inpatient Care Provides care and performs rounding duties for admitted patients with orthopedic needs. Coordinates care with hospitalists and/or consulting physicians Coordinates care with orthopedic attendings and their clinical teams Coordinates with clinics and healthcare facilities to ensure smooth progression of care. Surgical Assistance Acts as surgical assistant for orthopedic procedures, depending on need/availability.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • State of Colorado Certified Physician Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse OR Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preferred.
  • May be willing to train new grad with previous hospital/orthopedic experience or exceptional qualities.
  • 6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Responsibilities

  • Enters notes into the medical record, e.g., progress notes, event notes, documentation of calls, etc.
  • Write prescriptions/orders for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed
  • Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations on assigned patients
  • Assesses and treats acute/chronic medical problems and provides direct patient care
  • Complete FMLA, other forms, and school notes as needed
  • Provides basic education to patients as needed
  • Performs basic procedures such as joint aspirations, laceration repairs, cultures, as appropriate
  • Becomes proficient with electronic health record systems, prescription monitoring database, and other frequently utilized systems.
  • Must be willing to act as a resource to other providers.
  • Maintains adequate communication with attending physicians on call, relevant house staff and fellows, supervising physician; particularly with respect to any unusual, unexpected, or complex issues requiring direct physician consultation or intervention.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • May participate in training and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, mid-level students and other health professional students engaged in clinical activity.
  • Enhances their own professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Assists with relevant research and quality activities on-site, e.g., collection of registry/outcomes data, collection of surgical tissue samples for biobank, administration of patient surveys.
  • Assists with relevant community outreach events, e.g., with organizing, planning, and attending educational sessions.
  • Other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned and as appropriate.
